New Ventures using Old Skills

Today I enlisted at the local library, doing a demonstration and discussion concerning woodblock printing, one of my favorite mediums.

I'll be demonstrating how a woodcut is made. The block will be carved for printing, minus a few demonstration cuts with various knives. A talk about the wood, the cutting, inking and printing will be incorporated. Spooning will be used, rather than a printing press, more convenient, and frankly more to my liking.

A review of famous artists and their woodcuts, and some relatively unknown woodcut artists, moi included, will be discussed, along with original and reproductions of the work.

Yes, I will be doing a video of the same for youtube. Of course. And it will be on the gallery site, too. I love to watch artists work, though I'm one myself. We all do work a bit differently, sometimes a lot differently.

Hopefully, more people will learn a little more about art, and its far reaches into various creativity. It's always amazing to learn more; I'll be going to a talk on olive oil next month, at the same library. Various rooms and amenities are available, different size rooms, not like the corner stool that I remember in the library. All events are free to the public, a draw to the existence of libraries. And this library is new and huge, with an underground garage. Unbelievable.

This is as much fun for me as for the audience. I've been wanting to get back to woodcuts, but can't find my knives in storage. Since this isn't until April 22, 2010, I should have them found and at work. And I'll learn Powerpoint, an application I've never had a use for.

And I'm getting paid for this? I just love my profession....
